Why the Kapuas Landscape Matters
In the heart of Central Kalimantan, the Kapuas (Mentangai - Dadahup) peatland landscape holds a deep connection between forests, water, biodiversity, and community livelihoods. This area is more than just a stretch of land; it is a living space that sustains local livelihoods, stores carbon, regulates hydrological functions, and stands as a key ecological and cultural heritage. However, this landscape also carries a long history of transformation. The legacy of the Mega Rice Project (PLG) and various development interventions have shaped a complex landscape. Land cover changes, canal networks, peatland degradation, and fire risks present ongoing challenges that impact the landscape's ability to maintain its ecological functions.
